NIST Technical Note 1635,  A Case Study of a Community Affected by the Witch and Guejito Fires (PDF, 5 MB)
Alexander Maranghides, William Mell
The NIST WUI Team collected and analyzed post incident data from the California October 2007 fires in The Trails development at Rancho Bernardo, north of the City of San Diego. There were 274 homes in The Trails, with 245 within the fire perimeter.  Seventy four homes were completely destroyed and 16 were partly damaged. The case study’s findings overturned a number of myths about wildfires and home destruction.
