Arkansas Community Stories
The
Pencil Bluff community is located nine miles west of Mount ida at the junction
of 270 and 88. Pencil Bluff has the Ouachita River running near by, which
is how Pencil Bluff got its name. In the early settlement days, the children
from school would go on field trips to the river bluffs to find blue shale
that they, in turn, would use for their pencils in the classroom. For this
reason, residents called this place Pencil Bluff. The Ouachita River has
good fishing, including float trips that are booked by the many local canoe
rental establishments up and down the river.
The
Pencil Bluff area has many homes set in the woodlands overlooking this beautiful
river, making it an excellent example of wildland/urban interface living.
Thanks to the Firewise program, residents here will use the Firewise program
to eliminate potentially dangerous fuels even as they preserve their beautiful
living setting.
