So we have figured out what to do to get ready for a wildfire. What should we do if one is burning near where we live? Take a look at "Wildfire Approaching" to get ideas. THen, read this list, print it out and keep it handy...or better yet, memorize it!

  1. Report the fire
  2. Put on cotton/woolen clothing including long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and a bandana to protect your face. Wear sturdy leather shoes/work boots and wool socks, as well as gloves.
  3. Close windows, vents, and garage doors.
  4. Move all flammable furniture, doormats, woodpiles, or vegetation that could catch embers and ignite to at least 30 feet from the house.
  5. Roll up or remove any awnings and/or exterior blinds.
  6. Fill buckets or other bulk containers with water.
  7. Locate long water hoses, shovels and rakes. Place them where they are easily accessible to firefighters.
  8. Dampen all areas on the side of the house facing the direction of the fire.
  9. Locate pets, family members and the family evacuation kit.
  10. Back as many vehicles as possible into the garage and close the garage door.
  11. If evacuation occurs, close the garage door when leaving. When evacuating, keep the car windows rolled up.
