We're still crunching numbers, but it looks like we are retaining at least 85% of all communities active in the program (as we did in 2008). The program has grown quite a bit and we're nearer now to 600 active communities, just after announcing that we broke the 500-community mark.

Thought I'd share this blog from a community just down the road from the Firewise offices at the National Fire Protection Association headquarters in Quincy, Massachusetts. People who live in Firewise communities find more creative and exciting ways to deal with wildfire risks every year, and they have fun doing it! I'll keep you posted on growth as we wend our way through 2010.

Winter Issue of How To Newsletter Available

Winter's a great time to catch up on those courses you wanted to take on the Firewise Learning Center, renew your Firewise status, and learn how to Firewise your pets. I had visited the city of North Port, in southwestern Florida, back at the end of February. Besides enjoying warm sunshine and ocean views, I toured several subdivisions within the city limits and was concerned to find lots of flammable vegetation in a drought-stressed condition. Dry, dead or dying palms, palmettos, vines and lots of them, right in residential areas. I even witnessed the aftermath of a fire that started in a resident's shed, ignited a nearby palm tree, and sent flying firebrands into several neighbors' yards. Only quick work by the fire department saved the day.

There are a number of recognized Firewise Communities/USA sites in and around North Port, and I was delighted to read of a resident crediting his use of Firewise principles in building his home and maintaining his landscape for the survival of his home during a recent fire. Not only did this design make it easier for firefighters to defend his property, but also it prevented the house from igniting due to the three ways heat is transferred in a fire: radiation, convection and conduction. The large trees were far from the home, reducing radiant heat. His landscape was well-maintained, eliminating opportunities for surface fire to touch his home. And his home was well constructed and kept clean, so that embers landing on his roof or deck would not be able to ignite any debris nor construction materials. A true testament to paying attention to your home ignition zone!

Good articles on Firewise concepts

The word is getting out that Firewise practices make sense and help increase home safety in the wildland/urban interface. Do you see that you need to work on the five feet closest in when you walk around your house? This area should contain only non-flammable items like lawn, low-growing flowers and stone walkways. Are there things you can do to improve the area 30 feet out from the structure, on all sides? For starters, dead vegetation should be removed including leaves and pine needles on your roof and in your gutters, and firewood should not be located there. When you are happy, move on to 100 feet out---200 feet if you are on a steep slope.

For helpful ideas about making your home safer, play the interactive Firewise Hints and Preparing a Home for Wildfire Season games. I couldn't agree more. Firewise concepts are only valuable when they're applied in the real world. That's why Firewise Communities/USA sites are nationally recognized for their actions and ongoing work to create neighborhoods that are safer from wildfire.

We truly value these efforts and we even document how much work is going on in the neighborhoods. Last year alone, Firewise Communities/USA participants invested more than $17 million in their local wildfire safety - some through grants, some through donations, but mostly through "sweat equity" - volunteer time. A volunteer hour is now worth $20.25 according to the Independent Sector folks. Focusing on one homeowner's struggles to recover and rebuild, it shows what community support and perseverance is all about. Happily, the community is coming back Firewise. The Yankee Hill Fire Safe Council in Butte County worked to help community members restore lands and homesites in a condition that will be safer from wildfire, and applied to become a Firewise Communities/USA site. Concow/Yankee Hill joins more than 450 places around the U.S. that are recognized for voluntary community efforts to take responsibility for wildfire safety.

New Resource for Community-Owned Forests

Acquiring and Managing a Community-Owned Forest, a new manual published by the Society of American Foresters' Communities Committee, offers step-by-step advice on getting started, engaging the broader community, financing acquisition, and long-term management and stewardship, as well as an extensive, annotated list of additional resources. In New York last week, I spoke to about 65 residents, town officials, and firefighters about what they can do to take action to become safer from wildfire. One of the major changes was to Title III of the law, which covers the use of county funds paid by the USDA Forest Service and the US Department of the Interior to counties in 41 states and Puerto Rico in lieu of taxes.

The law was changed to say that Title III funds may be used only to carry out the Firewise Communities program, develop community wildfire protection plans, and reimburse for emergency services paid for by counties and performed on Federal land (e.g. search and rescue, firefighting).

The Firewise program worked with the USDA Forest Service to provide more detail after the law came into effect about how counties could use the funds to meet the new letter and spirit of the law.You can learn more about the Title III changes and the interpretation of how funding can be used by counties for Firewise activities by visiting http://www.fs.fed.us/srs/Title-III-FAQs.shtml.

Live Discussion--Prepare, Stay, Defend

For those who may have missed it, check here for an informative discussion about the Australian "Leave Early or Stay and Defend" strategy in the wake of the recent fires.
