The Firewise Communities Program has posted its new online quiz, “Preparing Your Home for Wildfire Season.” The quiz, which consists of 10 questions, focuses on Firewise principles and tips residents can use to help prepare their homes and property before a wildfire threatens their area.

Colorado wildfire raises concern for community safety

The recent fire in the small town of Eckley, in the state’s northeastern plains, highlights the threats to homes and property from wildfire in communities across Colorado. The lack of snowfall, coupled with higher-than-normal temperatures and high winds, lead experts to predict that Colorado’s wildfire season will be active and potentially dangerous.

NFPA offers workshops on home wildfire risk assessment

NFPA is offering a Two-Day Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone Workshop (HIZ) at several U.S. locations in 2012. The curriculum is aimed at fire service professionals, urban and state foresters, developers, community planners, insurance professionals and others who are committed to understanding and learning about ways to reduce losses from these fires, and increasing wildfire risk awareness among residents and communities.

NFPA announces Firewise photo contest

The Firewise® Communities Program announces its first Firewise Calendar Photo Contest and invites photo enthusiasts to submit their favorite, original photographs of Firewise plants in their natural habitat. Winning entries will be displayed in the 2013 Firewise calendar. The contest runs from February 3, 2012 through March 16, 2012.
