Patti Maguire joins NFPA’s Firewise Communities Program as regional advisor

The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Firewise® Communities Program named Patti Maguire the Firewise advisor for its Southwest 2 Region to help expand the association’s community wildfire safety activities. Maguire will join the program’s five existing regional advisors and oversee Firewise activities in communities in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas and Utah.

NFPA releases new WUI best practices guide for planners and regulators

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced the release of a new best practices guide, Community Wildfire Safety Through Regulation. The guide is designed to help planners and regulators considering wildfire regulations to understand their options and implement a successful public process for adoption effective wildland/urban interface (WUI) tools that match local needs. Community Wildfire Safety Through Regulation is available through NFPA’s wildland fire safety web page.

NFPA releases new wildfire DVD for small and local fire departments

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced the release of a new DVD, Before the Smoke! Preparing Your Community for Wildfire (Strategies for Small & Volunteer Fire Departments). Aimed at small and volunteer fire departments in the wildland/urban interface (WUI), Before the Smoke! emphasizes the importance of relationship-building between local fire departments and residents, and how these partnerships can make a marked difference in a community’s effort to reduce its wildfire risk despite department budget cuts and limited fire suppression resources. The DVD is available at no charge through NFPA’s wildfire safety online catalog.

Fire Adapted Communities coalition announces release of wildfire report and video

The Fire Adapted Communities (FAC) Coalition has announced the release of a new report, “Lessons from Waldo Canyon” and a companion video, “Creating Fire Adapted Communities: A Case Study from Colorado Springs and the Waldo Canyon Fire.” Both the video and report will be available through the Fire Adapted Communities website on Tuesday, March 19, 2013.

5th Backyards and Beyond Wildland Fire Education Conference slated for Salt Lake City

Registration for the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 5th Backyards & Beyond® Wildland Fire Education Conference is now available online. The conference will be held November 14 – 16 in Salt Lake City, Utah where experts and stakeholders will gather to discuss wildfire safety issues and best practices for reducing risks. With more than 50 breakout sessions in five educational tracks, the Backyards and Beyond conference offers leading wildland fire experts, community planners, civic leaders, homeowners and residents, insurance professionals, landscape architects, and physical and social researchers and scientists an opportunity to build relationships and explore answers to important wildland fire safety questions that can be taken back to communities and the workplace.

Firewise launches national wildfire safety challenge for communities

The Firewise® Communities Program announced its new national wildfire safety challenge for communities. The “1,000 Safer Places: Firewise Communities/USA® Recognition Program Challenge” encourages residents across the country to take steps to combat the threat of wildfire and reduce the damage fire can do to homes and property.

Firewise Communities Program tops 800th community mark

The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Firewise® Communities Program today reached a milestone in announcing the 800th community to earn recognition as a Firewise Communities/USA® site. Vansant Mobile Home Park #2 in Cullman County, Alabama, is the latest neighborhood to take action to improve residents’ safety from threats posed by brush, grass and forest fires. And it’s the first to showcase the efforts of a state forestry staffer whose commitment included her own investment in mitigation work on her property.
